I suggest it's a good idea for friends and loved ones to sit with the mom before baby comes and ask what she likes to eat. Then you have a list to work from and Mom doesn't have to think about it. I also provide this service when I work with a family. The best part is it can be customized for the family and in some homes, meals are the sole focus of what the busy family wants by way of assistance. Mom gets to spend more time with baby and siblings rather than in the kitchen.

New Mom Meals
New Moms really appreciate a meal that is already cooked and easy to grab. Soups in individual containers, a mild chili, pre-portioned individual meals or casseroles, pre-made sandwiches for the refrigerator and freezer, individually wrapped. For freezer sandwiches, don't use lettuce or veggies that wilt and use individual sauce travel packets so the bread doesn't get soggy.

Great suggestions! It was such a BIG help for us that my mom stocked our freezer with dinners for the first two weeks. Things like lasagna, beef stew, chicken noodle soup, baked chicken with potatoes and carrots casserole, etc. Barbeque/sloppy joe meat also freezes well.
Another big help was my hubby buying one-handed items from the grocery store. (New moms never have two hands free!) Things like: string cheese, granola bars, cereal bars, drinkable yogurt.
Any other suggestions to share, ladies?
You make a great point! One handed food. I try to package soups in large mugs so they can drink it & even do this for myself when working with a family.
Also, by putting meals in individual containers, Mom doesn't have to think about finding another dish to put the food in if she is alone. Another staple is small flour tortillas. They are great for making a quick meal or snack.
I've used FoodTidings.com too. The website makes it really easy to put out a meal schedule for people to sign up on... when I did it for my friend, she had meals provided on MWF for two months after having her baby!
Thank for the tip Alyssa! This site seems to take the role of Coordinator since everyone has busy lives. I've filled the Coordinator role in several situations, so for me, it's actually a fun thing. :)
